A 5.9 M earthquake at a depth of 10 km shook Iran’s West Azerbaijan Province, close to the border with Türkiye, on January 28 at 18:14 UTC. The epicentre was located 14 km south of the city of Khoy.
Two other earthquakes ranging from 4.1 M and 4.5 M, both at a 10 km depth, followed the 5.9 M quake. According to media reports, the quake was felt in multiple cities, including in Khoy, Tabriz and in the provincial capital and largest city Urmia.
The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reports that at least three people have been killed and more than 800 injured. Some 70 villages have suffered damages in the earthquake.
The responsible authorities are currently providing assistance to the affected population in the West Azerbaijan Province.
The province was shook by a 5.4-magnitude earthquake earlier this month, which caused extensive damage to properties in the city of Khoy.
