Honduras - Floods, update (ECHO 28 Sep 2022)

  • The number of affected people is increasing following widespread floods that have been affecting 123 municipalities of Honduras.
  • According to media, 13 people have died, while national authorities report almost 16,000 evacuated people in 151 evacuation centres, and more than 67,100 affected people.
  • For the next 24 hours, moderate to locally heavy rain is forecast over most parts of Honduras.
  • A red alert for floods is in effect over the whole Departments of Santa Bárbara and Copàn, and for the municipalities located close to the Ulùa River in Cortés Department.

Mali - Floods (ECHO 28 Sep 2022)

  • Over the past week, heavy rain has affected the Mopti Region located in central Mali, causing floods and the overflow of Bani Reiver that resulted in widespread damage.
  • According to media reports, 3,000 people have been displaced and 550 houses damaged or destroyed. Two villages located close to the Bani River have been severely affected.
  • On 28-29 September, no rain is forecast over Mopti Region, while moderate rain is expected over southern Mali.

Philippines, Viet Nam, Lao PDR, Thailand - Tropical Cyclone NORU (ECHO 28 Sep 2022)

  • In Philippines, on 28 September, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) reported 121,307 households or 429,794 persons are affected in 1,630 unit of administration (Barangays). The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported eight deaths, five missing and 52,894 people are displaced in 574 evacuation centres and outside, 3,068 damaged and 631 destroyed houses. Assessment is ongoing with DG ECHO field staff deployed on the ground.
  • In Viet Nam, on 27 September, authorities reported one injured person, damage to houses has been reported across the Provinces of Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, and Thua Thien. Many areas in central Vietnam have been affected by heavy rainfall and strong winds, the water level of several rivers has exceeded the alarming level 2. 
  • NORU is expected to downgrade to a tropical storm as it reaches Laos on 28 September and Thailand on 29 September. In Lao, the government made official announcements of possible landslides, flooding and strong winds. In Thailand, the government is taking anticipatory actions for potential flooded communities.

USA, Cuba - Tropical Cyclone IAN update (ECHO 28 Sep 2022)

  • Tropical Cyclone IAN made landfall on the morning of 27 September in Pinar del Rio Province (western Cuba), with maximum sustained winds of 205 km/h (Cat 3. Hurricane). According to UN OCHA, more than 3 Million people have been affected as damage to infrastructure, and housing has been reported in the Provinces of Pinar del Rio, Artemisa and Havana. About 2.7 Million people experienced power outages.
  • IAN is currently moving northwards over the eastern Gulf of Mexico, and on 28 September at 6.00 UTC its centre was located about 155 km south-west of Naples City (south-west Florida), with maximum sustained winds of 195 km/h (Cat.3 Hurricane).
  • Evacuation orders have been issued for residents across western Florida, while several emergency shelters have been prepared, as IAN is expected to make landfall near Cape Coral City (south-west Florida) in the afternoon of 28 September, with maximum sustained winds up to 213 km/h (Cat. 4 Hurricane). Then it is forecast to weaken, as it moves onshore over central Florida. 
  • Hurricane warnings, as well as storm surge warnings, are in effect for the western coast of Florida, while tropical storm warnings have been issued for the eastern coast of Florida and coastal western Cuba.
