  • Heavy rainfall has been affecting southern Brazil (particularly the São Paulo State and the neighbouring Rio de Janeiro State) over the past 48 hours, causing floods, severe weather-related incidents (in particular due to lightning), and triggering landslides that have resulted in casualties and damage.
  • Media report, as of 9 February, six fatalities across the Rio de Janeiro State, of which two in the Rio de Janeiro Capital City due to landslides, two in São Goncalo Town, one in Niteroi City, and one more in Saquarema City.
  • In the São Paulo State, media also report one fatality in Osasco City and one person still missing across the São Paulo Capital City.
  • Over the next 24 hours, more heavy rainfall is forecast over the whole Rio de Janeiro State and over the southern coastal area of the São Paulo State.
Mato Grosso Do Sul, Brazil, February and March 2023Overflowing rivers caused flooding in Porto Murtinho in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil from late February 2023. Local media reported some families were evacuated. Civil Defence teams were deployed to Porto Murtinho and also to Jardim, where the Miranda River was rising, and Bela Vista, which recorded heavy rain of 140 mm in 24 hours to 02 March. Earlier heavy rain of almost 300 mm in 24 hours on 17 February caused flooding and damage in Ponta Porã.
